The research activity performed at the SSV leads to the production of 20-30 papers per year, published in national and international journals

The most recent topics presently being developed are as follows:

  • testing of analytical methods for the certification of Standard Reference Materials;
  • chemical behaviour of lead crystal glass in contact with food and beverages;
  • studies of ancient glass composition, glassmaking technology and corrosion mechanisms;
  • physico-chemical characterization of industrial glass surfaces and their reactivity;
  • lass surface studies in relation to mechanical strength;
  • evaluation of the mechanical behaviour of glass containers by production process analysis;
  • studies of glass homogeneity and workability: dissolved water and redox, microstructure, phase separation, molecular structures, layers with different chemical compositions, thermo radiative properties, surface chemical composition gradient;
  • development of optical methods for emissivity analysis;
  • development of calculation programs for the evaluation of solar energy and heat losses of glazings, natural daylight, etc.;
  • optical characterization of innovative and multifunctional glazings;
  • melting process optimization;
  • design, building and industrial testing of a prototype electric furnace with molybdenum electrodes for the artistic glass industry;
  • formulation of low-polluting batch compositions;
  • recycling, neutralization and vitrification of asbestos, toxic solid wastes, ashes from municipal solid waste incineration, industrial slags, etc.,in order to obtain secondary raw materials or finished products;
  • industrial testing of oxycombustion on discontinuous furnaces;
  • scintillating glass;
